randi2204: (mag7 - undeniable yearning)

After an unintended break - mostly because I'm terribly forgetful - the Friday prompt post returns!

If you have ideas to share, leave them as comments to this post. If you're looking for ideas to work on, take a gander at the prompts left here and see what gets your muse working. With luck, the result will be fannish fun for everyone!

Prompts work best with certain bits of information: Character(s)/pairing, universe, prompt.
Example: Chris/Ezra, any, you’d have to be crazy to love me, oh, but I wish you would.

If none of today's prompts get the words/art/fun flowing, there are lots of other prompts at our Del.icio.us archive that might. And when I say lots, I mean LOTS.

Ready, set, prompt!

Prompts

  • Chris/Ezra, any, you’d have to be crazy to love me, oh, but I wish you would.
  • Boogie's song prompts! Character, song title, song artist. If anyone needs extra information on the song, just ask.

    • Buck, "Behind Blue Eyes", The Who
    • JD, "Ghost Story", Sting
    • Chris, "Hero" by Phil Collins
    • Vin, "Run for the Roses", Dan Fogelberg
    • Ezra, "Return to Pooh Corner", Loggins
    • Nathan, "Desert Rose", Sting
    • Josiah, "Star Trekkin' ", The Firm

was this morning.

"The" interview (as opposed to the thousands of others I've had in the last six months, I guess) went well. But that's no guarantee, you know? There are seven other candidates - they did four yesterday and they'll have four next Tuesday, so the absolute soonest they'd have an answer is Tuesday night. I was first, 8:30-10:00 AM, and then I cooled my heels for an hour and worked 11-4 same as usual.

During the course of a workday, I might be at several different posts: I could be in the Welcome area, I could be upstairs at Adult reference, maybe I'm orbiting somewhere out on the floor, maybe I'm on the phones, which are tucked away in an admin area that may or may not have people near. It's where the staff conference room is, which is where I had my interview.

So in the afternoon I'm in the Welcome area, and a woman comes in, looking around. I ask if I can assist her and she says she's just looking around. I see her again later and she says she has an appointment with ____, and I realize, what ho, a rival.

Don't worry, I didn't scare her off. )

“News of the OTW bubbled up from many directions at once, most likely through my associations with Escapade, but also through an academic colleague whose partner at the time was involved. I was so excited to hear about the emergence of this fan advocacy network which brought together fannish lawyers willing to help protect our fair use rights as fans; fan scholars publishing their work through a peer-reviewed journal; fan programmers using their skills in support of the community; and of course, an archive where fans controlled what happened to their own works without the interference of web 2.0 interests.

Each of these things is important on its own terms, but taken together, this organization has been a transformative force, in all senses of the words, for fans and their rights to participate.”

today, i *finally* managed to finish mowing the far back yard.  for the *second* time this summer.  the problem has been a combination of the weather and the fact that the entire neighborhood drains through my yard.  if it's a dry year, like last year - no problem.  if the weather pattern is 'rain hard enough to produce standing water in the low places of the neighborhood, dry out just enough to tease you about it, rain to produce standing water *again*, lather-rinse-repeat', you get the situation i had this summer - i could barely mow the front yard 3-4 times since june, and haven't been able to *get* to the backyard to mow it at *all* since june.  and the grass here grows like bamboo in the summer rainy season.  as a result, i have enough grass hay to see if i can burn a tree with it (one on the interior of the yard, not the back fence!).  i'm seriously considering doing this as an experiment....

-boogieshoes, kinda lawn-mower stinky right now....

I'm back! From my travels through Spain. Ate A LOT of food. One of my travel pals eats like every 2 hours or something. I didn't spend one second of this trip hungry. Also, I managed to avoid having an allergic reaction, which I was honestly quite worried about. Something I ate on the last day made my right eyelid start itching, but it was very light and easily ignored for the most part.

And I managed to tick off everything on my itinerary. We even wen to see a live soccer futbol game for Real Madrid. It was awesome! So, go me. *pats self on back*

Here are a few pics. :D Below the cut. eta to make the images smaller whoops

Spain is a lovely country. )

Media

I watched a pretty good docu about climate change that didn't tell me anything new, but did do a great job of providing a veritable smorgasbord of apocalyptic story ideas! Once we reach the 2 degrees celsius rise in global temperature (having already reached 1 degree), you got your fire-ravaged world, your flooded world, your earthquake-devastated world, your pandemic world, your starvation world....

19-2: The final episode of this show airs tonight. S4 has been tying up a bunch of loose ends as we approach the end. I'll miss the Ben & Nick partnership; also the new gay sarge & Bear & Tyler. I cheered when Bear finally got her promotion to sergeant! My 2 major hopes for the final episode are... Read more... )

Outlander: I'm only watching this show because I heard the gay guy might turn up some time during this 3rd series. Is he called John Gray or something like that? I haven't read the books so I have only the vaguest of notions.

The best things about this show remain the opening credits; the Scots accents & music; & the production values. My major reaction to 301-02 is: OMG, Frank, stop wasting your life being devoted to a woman who doesn't give a flying fuck about you! Wake up! Move on!

Teen Wolf: my watch for Derek & Stiles in the show's final few episodes continues. Spoilers 618 & 619 )

Upstart Crow: the other show about Shakespeare is back for its 2nd series! This one's the comedy rather than the (slightly) more serious Will that debuted this year. Only 1 episode into the new series so far, but I laughed several times, so it's promising.

OTW 10th Anniversary Chat

What were some of your early experiences like when your work gained its own fans?

*MarthaWells
I think my favorite experience is seeing the fan art, and seeing fanfic from my books show up in Yuletide. That’s hugely exciting to see fanfic and fan art of your work, especially to someone who was a fan from way back in the print zine era.

*SeananMcGuire
The first time something I’d created showed up as a fandom option for Yuletide, I literally cried. Happy tears! But it was like, HOLY WHAT NO HOW OMG VIXY LOOK AT THIS DO YOU SEE THIS. It’s amazing. It’s still amazing. I can’t read any of the fanfic of my own work, but knowing it exists makes me so happy.

OTW 10th Anniversary Chat

What things have you been excited to see in recent years, either regarding fandom or work in your genre(s)?

*Catherine R.
I really like fanfiction and its explosion on the internet. I think fanfic is a great way for people to learn the craft skills of writing. Many of my college students fall in love with writing that way: by reading fanfic and then starting to write it themselves. I always encourage them to go for it! I love the supportive structure it creates for imagination and fantasy to run wild. I think that realm is so important. Imagination lets us explore quandaries of desire and justice and truth and conflict: all the central problems of what it means to be human.

*Christina L.
It’s been incredibly exciting to see so many writers from our fandom specifically or fandom in general out there publishing books. Of course we all know the big ones—EL James, Cassie Clare—but there are others from the Twi world that had fantastic voices and ideas and who are now also bestsellers. Sally Thorne, Alice Clayton, Nina Bocci, Leisa Rayven, Mariana Zapata, Amanda Weaver—all of these women wrote fantastic fic.

Thank you for the friendly ear, and for the comments. Sometimes you just want someone to say, "... what?"

So I've been working on the new round of assignments for the full-time position I'm trying for. The trading cards mentioned last time are one example of things that can be done to get people interested in reading - I was actually leaning towards a Dia de los Muertos tombstone thingie, but nothing gelled in my head. After the *koff* chat *koff koff* with my brother, I decided to do trading cards on 21st century African American authors. Heh.

I also had to do a video book review, which is a painful exercise in "OMG I'M FAT" on top of "I WOKE UP WITH RED EYES GREAT NOW THEY'LL THINK I'M A STONER" but on the whole - not the worst thing I've done. I didn't think it was something that would tank my chances nor put me over the top.

... But something did, because I'm going on to the next round! WHOO HOO! I have an interview for the job!

Which means the next few weeks is going to be about staying calm and chill and not think about the future, which I have divided into "I will not get the job and life will suck and I will die alone and unloved" and "I get the job I move I buy a toaster oven nothing bad will ever happen again"

For those who wonder about my mental state, you are not alone.
